CFD—Assisted Expert System for N2-Controlled Atmosphere Process of Rice Storage Silos

Since organic rice storage silos were faced with an insect problem, an owner solved this problem using the expert system (ES) in the controlled atmosphere process (CAP) under the required standard, fumigating insects with an N2, reducing O2 concentration to less than 2% for 21 days. This article presents the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) assisted ES successfully solved this problem. First, CFD was employed to determine the gas flow pattern, O2 concentration, proper operating conditions, and a correction factor (K) of silos. As expected, CFD results were consistent with the experimental results and theory, assuring the CFD’s credibility. Significantly, CFD results revealed that the ES controlled N2 distribution throughout the silos and effectively reduced O2 concentration to meet the requirement. Next, the ES was developed based on the inference engine assisted by CFD results and the sweep-through purging principle, and it was implemented in the CAP. Last, the experiments evaluated CAP’s efficacy in controlling O2 concentration and insect extermination in the actual silos. The experimental results and owner’s feedback confirmed the excellent efficacy of ES implementation; therefore, the CAP is effective and practical. The novel aspect of this research is a CFD methodology to create the inference engine and the ES.

Enhancing Sustainable Fish Gelatin Properties through Furcellaran Incoporation: Innovations in Eco-friendly Gelling Techniques

Fish gelatin is increasingly recognized as an alternative source of gelatin, but its use has been limited due to weak gelling properties. To address these issues, the effect of furcellaran, a gelling agent, was examined at various levels (25-100% FG substitution) on the structural and physicochemical properties of FG gels. As the amount of FUR increased to 25%, the FG/FUR gel showed improved hardness and gel strength (P<0.05). Additionally, increasing FUR levels led to higher gelling and melting points, showing a dose-dependent relationship. Microstructural analysis revealed that adding FUR created a denser gel network with smaller gaps. SAXS scattering intensities also increased as FUR concentration rose. Overall, adding FUR improved the gelling properties of FG without negatively affecting springiness and syneresis, enhancing gel strength and gelling temperature.

EcoGrow Pellets: Recycled Clay Pellets Enriched with Natural Calcium

Eco Grow Pellets are high-porosity plant-growing clay pellets made from ceramic industrial sediment, blended with ground chicken bone to enhance calcium and essential minerals, promoting strong and healthy plant growth. They are suitable for all types of plants, especially those requiring well-aerated soil with good water drainage. Eco Grow Pellets are an innovative clay-based growing medium designed to optimize plant cultivation efficiency. Their high porosity structure allows for excellent air and water circulation, reducing soil compaction and waterlogging—common causes of root rot and stunted growth. Additionally, the pellets are enriched with calcium and essential minerals from ground chicken bones, reinforcing plant structure and enhancing root strength, enabling better nutrient absorption. This product is made from 100% recycled ceramic industrial sediment, aligning with the principles of Zero Waste and the BCG Economy Model. It helps minimize industrial waste while transforming discarded materials into high-value, eco-friendly growing media. Eco Grow Pellets are ideal for vegetables, flowers, and potted plants, offering ease of use, cleanliness, and safety. They contribute to sustainable agriculture by improving both crop productivity and environmental health.

Developing Rice Starch-Rice Bran Polyphenol Complexes for Glycemic Control Using Green Processing

Zero-waste management is crucial for sustainable food systems, promoting the use of agricultural by-products like rice bran. Rich in bioactive polyphenols with antioxidant and antidiabetic properties, rice bran can enhance the nutritional value of food. Polyphenols can slow starch digestion by forming complexes with starch, making them useful for creating low-glycemic foods. While ultrasonication and freeze-thaw treatments have been beneficial individually, their combined effects on starch-polyphenol complexation remain understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of combining these treatments on the interaction between rice starch and red rice bran polyphenols. The dual treatment increased the complexing index, altered functional properties, and affected granule morphology. Structural analysis indicated non-covalent interactions forming non-V-type complexes. Additionally, starch digestibility was reduced, lowering the estimated glycemic index (eGI) compared to the control. These findings suggest a sustainable and green approach to starch modification, with potential for developing functional food products and advancing zero-waste processing.

Sustainable Water Hyacinth Disposal electric smart boat Innovation

The Water Hyacinth Removal Electric Smart Boat is a small, streamlined boat capable of working in any area. Even small areas with a lot of water hyacinth volumes with advanced technology that the researcher has created and designed. The structure of the boat is made of aluminum material, is 4.80 meters long and 1.20 meters wide, and is powered by a diesel engine 14 hp. Reinforcing drive in tandem with spinning, chopping weeds and the ability to remove water hyacinths by spinning 3-5 per day with only one operator on boat. Therefore, the control and removal of water hyacinths by smart boat works better than conventional mechanization. It can work quickly and at a low cost. This water hyacinth removal electric smart boat concept will be built on the original system.

Astaxanthin-rich Oil Extracted with Ultrasound Assisted-Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent from the Byproduct of Black Tiger Shrimp (Panaeus monodon).

The study investigated the extraction of astaxanthin-rich oil from shrimp waste biomass, a valuable byproduct rich in functional lipids and proteins. Wet rendering has long been an inexpensive method to extract oil, however the high temperatures and long cooking times negatively affect the amount of astaxanthin. On the other hand, the study looked into employing deep eutectic solvent as a green solvent and combining a wet rendering process with high-shear homogenization and high-frequency ultrasound-assisted extractions. DES-UAE at 60% amplitude and wet rendering at 60 °C were found to be the ideal conditions, as were DES-HAE at 13,000 rpm and wet rendering at 60 °C. With a notable increase in oil yields of 16.80% and 20.12%, respectively, and improved oil quality (lower acid and peroxide values) in comparison to the conventional wet rendering, experimental validation validated the effectiveness of the DES-HAE and DES-UAE procedures. DES-UAE notably raised the amount of astaxanthin. This study demonstrates that DES-HAE and DES-UAE are quicker, lower-temperature substitutes for obtaining premium, astaxanthin-rich shrimp oil, resulting in more effective use of this priceless byproduct.
