This study examines the morphological and genetic variations of the dwarf whipray (Brevitrygon heterura) in the Gulf of Thailand. By analyzing 49 samples, researchers identified two distinct groups, providing essential data for accurate species identification and conservation.
Dwarf whipray (Brevitrygon heterura) is a common species found in local markets in the Gulf of Thailand. Like many other stingrays, it is threatened by overfishing and habitat destruction. Accurate species identification is crucial because conservation efforts may vary depending on the species. This study aims to understand the morphological variation of B. heterura in the Gulf of Thailand through morphometric study and genetic analysis:
- 49 samples were obtained between October 2022 and February 2023.
- Two distinct groups were observed based on 43 morphological variables.
- Group A (Chanthaburi, Rayong, Chonburi, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla) typically has a longer snout than Group B (Prachuap Khiri Khan).
- DNA barcoding (COI gene) revealed a pairwise percent sequence divergence (p-distance) between the groups of 0.0-2.5.
