Details

KidneyScan+ is a portable screening platform for CKD and kidney stones, utilizing dual-layer microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) and AI-powered smartphone image analysis to simultaneously measure urinary albumin, creatinine, and uric acid.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney stones are major public health concerns in Thailand. Early detection is essential for delaying disease progression. This research project develops a dual-layer microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) capable of simultaneously determining urinary albumin, creatinine, and uric acid in a single test.

Key features include:

  • Dual-layer design: The upper layer filters urine samples, while the lower layer contains specific colorimetric sensing zones for selective detection.
  • KidneyScan+ App: A smartphone application for Android and iOS that employs AI-based image analysis to quantify analyte concentrations, calculate the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR), and provide immediate risk assessment.
  • Portability: Designed for point-of-care testing (POCT), facilitating self-screening and remote healthcare (telehealth).

Objective

The project aims to develop a paper-based analytical device for simultaneous detection of three biomarkers, create the KidneyScan+ mobile application for AI-based analysis, and validate the performance of the integrated system.

  1. To develop a paper-based analytical device for the simultaneous detection of albumin, creatinine, and uric acid.
  2. To develop the “Kidney Scan+” application for capturing images and processing the concentrations of these three variables using a mobile phone.
  3. To validate the accuracy of the developed device and application.
